Basic SEO Lessons Part 5: IMG Alt Tag

Your images should be described using ALT Tags with the keywords you are optimizing for.

Example:
Instead of just putting
<img src=”image.jpg”>,
you should put it as
<img src=”image.jpg” alt=”Image descriptions for engines to index”>

Besides for SEO optimization, the purpose of ALT text is also to describe the image for the benefit of those who surf the Web with images turned off. Therefore, do not include keywords that are not related to your image. Keyword spamming will adversely affect your rankings in the SERPs.

Basic SEO Lessons Part 4: URL Format

When you search a term in Google, you will notice that the term not only appears in the content but is also part of the URL.

Example: If you have a post on SEO Lessons, the URL http://www.greatbloggingtips.com/basic-seo-lessons-part-3-content-body-tag/ will certainly be more meaningful than http://www.greatbloggingtips.com/p03/

Simple URL design rules:

  1. Make it short, simple but descriptive
  2. Make it human and machine readable
  3. No special characters except hyphen “-“
  4. Do not change your URL once it has been set

Basic SEO Lessons Part 3: Content (Body Tag)

Repeat your keyword phrases a few times as this denotes strong emphasis to the search engines.
However, do keep in mind that you should not repeat the keywords too frequently until your readers end up feeling frustrated.

Make sure you use H1 and H2 tags to highlight important keywords of your content.
Help search engine to get more relevant content and they will help you to attract more visitors! 🙂

Basic SEO Lessons Part 2: Add Meta Tags

Some people argue that search engines do not use meta tags anymore but I think it’s better to include them since it won’t bring any harm if you do 🙂

Description:
The description tag is used to describe your blog. Some search engines will use this information to summarize your blog in their search listings. You should include your keyword phrases in the description tag.
The description tag should provide a 25-30 word description of your blog and you should avoid using more than 3 commas.

Keywords:
The keyword tag should of course include the “keyword phrases” that you are targeting in order of importance. Start with the most important and then proceed to less important but still relevant keywords. Do not include keywords that are not relevant to the theme of your site.

Do not repeat any word more than 3 times within the keyword tag. You should put around 15-20 keywords max.

Example of meta tags:

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Enter your Title here</TITLE>
<META name="keywords" content="Enter your keywords here">
<META name="description" content="Enter your description here">

</HEAD>
<BODY>
Enter your page's body text here.
</BODY>
</HTML>

Basic SEO Lessons Part 1: Add Title Tag

The title tag is definitely the most important tag in the header section of your blog.
The title tag is displayed in the blue bar at the top of your browser window.
I suggest that you choose keywords related to your site only.
Do not choose popular but unrelated keywords such as sex, porn etc. if your blog doesn’t contain any of these.
Title should not exceed 60 characters.

Example of title tag:

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Enter your Title here</TITLE>
<META name="keywords" content="Enter your keywords here">
<META name="description" content="Enter your description here">
</HEAD>
<BODY>
Enter your page's body text here.
</BODY>
</HTML>
